How to Improve Your Memory

Proper Diet

Although it may sound a bit far-fetched, but what you put in your gut can impact your brain. There are actually super foods for the brain that can aid in improving cognitive function and memory. Examples of these foods are antioxidants like cauliflower, broccoli, celery, and curry; as well as healthy fats from fish, coconut oil, and avocados.

It is not only essential to pack up on these healthy foods but also avoid their opposites to ensure overall good brain health. Examples of such opposites are foods that are highly refined sugars, too many starches from grains like white bread and white rice, and even highly processed vegetable oil that is commonly used for deep-frying

You do not have to remember all the details when it comes to foods to eat, and what not to eat to improve your memory, all you have to think about is eating healthy and right, because generally, what is good for your body is also good for your brain.

Physical Exercise

A nice spa treatment can really relax the mind, body and spirit. If you are feeling stressed and need to decompress, getting a massage can go a long way. Getting a massage is also wonderful to enhance memory by ridding the body of toxins and other crap usually in the muscles. My favorite day spa to visit after school is Thermae Retreat to relieve myself of the day to day stresses. Taking proper care of your body is such an important job.

Physical Exercise

When you exercise, your blood flow tends to increase, thus also increasing blood flow to the brain. This increased blood flow stimulates your brain to increase function and increase nerve cell connection as well as their protection from damage that naturally occurs with prolonged negative stresses and age.

Researchers found that people who regularly exercise actually increase their brain’s memory center by two percent each year, compared to individuals who do not exercise. High-intensity interval exercises, in particular, are found to be most beneficial as the bursts of energy and activity created significant brain blood flow.

Adequate Sleep

If you have ever been severely sleep deprived, you would know for a fact that it is very difficult to function, remember things, and make analyses and decisions while seemingly in a heavy trance. Having adequate sleep, even for just a solid six hours at night can have a great benefit to your brain’s performance the following day. The effects are actually that instant.

Napping is also found to improve brainpower. That is because, while we rest, the brain has more opportunities to create synaptic connections that are vital to its proper function.   

Focus

As much as you can, take one task at a time. It takes time for your brain to ingrain a memory properly, so you need to focus on it for some time if you plan on remembering it later on. Doing multiple things at a time may help you achieve a lot of tasks at once, but if your goal is to improve your memory for a certain thing, this may not be helping you at all. If you find it hard to focus on one task and get distracted easily, try and do meditation exercises to help your focus on what is important.

Mental Exercise

Just as important as exercising your body is to exercise your brain. Providing your brain with the right stimulus actually helps keep it from wearing out. Try playing brain games like those found online. Word puzzles and mystery solving games are also fun. Another thing you can do is to learn a new skill. This perks your brain up since it gives it a break from your usual routine.
